SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School

Sunday schools which offer religious instruction for children on Sundays has got its historical foundations over early century Christian Education. In the past twenty centuries, Christian Church has served as the primary means of education of the civilizations. The New Testament Gospels witness to the teaching ministry of Jesus, by placing Him as a Guru or teacher. Sunday School is the best-known institution of Christian Education.

Although the Christian Church established catechetical schools from early centuries, the Sunday school traces its roots back only in the eighteenth century. Robert Raikes of England had pioneered Sunday school development as an effective tool for battling vice and moral degeneration of the children who were exploited by the Industrial Revolution.

Pulikkottil Mar Dianasius II, who was a close associate of St. Gregorios of Parumala and the master-mind for the Parumala Seminary, Parumala Church, Kottayam M.D. Seminary etc. was the originator of many of the spiritual organizations of the Malankara Orthodox Church, like Youth movement, Malankara Sunday School Association etc. The centrally organized Sunday School Samajam started functioning in 1931 with the appointment of Puthencavu Geevarghese Mar Philexinos Mtropolitan as its President and Fr. K.David as the General Secretary.

The contemporary form of "Orthodox Sunday School Association of the East" (OSSAE) was commenced on October 15, 1964. Now the OSSAE is wide spread in all diocese of the Church including outside Kerala and overseas. The curriculum includes the study of Values of Christian life, the contents of the Bible, the Church history, sacraments and prayers. The Current President of Sunday School Association is H.G. Mathews Mar Epiphanios and Director General Rev. Fr. T. J. Joshua.
